Mirai Ishiyama explores themes of human faith and memory, drawing on the history of folklore and modernism. Her work involves a continuous interplay between academic research and physical practice, and her art unfolds as an attempt to question the fundamental meaning of "drawing."
In recent years, I have been strongly drawn to cultures and customs where religion and folk beliefs intersect. Through exposure to animism, ancestor worship, seasonal rituals, and traditions related to the dead, I have deepened my interest in universal themes such as religion and spirituality, the individual and community, and Sei to Shi. I also have a strong interest in how the memories and prayers of anonymous people, inscribed in legends and songs passed down orally, continue to live on, intertwined with the land and landscape.
Ishiyama views painting not merely as a visual expression, but as a practice that connects with the rituals, beliefs, and workings of imagination that humanity has practiced since ancient times. His works, which capture invisible beings, traces of memory, and pre-verbal sensations, shed light on human mental activity that cannot be grasped by rational understanding. He also develops works and installations using everyday objects such as mops and cloths, and by reinterpreting them as ritualistic tools and mediators, he explores the relationship between people and objects, and between people and invisible beings.
His attempts to connect with the unconscious layers preserved in traditions, myths, and folk practices transcend the boundaries of artistic expression, prompting a re-examination of the essence of human existence and the nature of spirituality that is being lost in modern society. Currently, he continues his artistic activities, primarily through painting, drawing inspiration from traces of faith and imagination passed down through cultures and eras.
