Yurina Okada's works pose questions about the possibilities of 2D works that should exist in the next generation, crossing the boundaries of painting and photography.
Her works, which go through the process of flattening photographs of flowers and women of the same generation using a transfer technique and pouring paint into the cracks that appear, include both photography and painting processes. However, rather than leaning toward either, they suggest a new realm with a somewhat craft-like character, in which the strength and precision of objects are carefully explored through handwork.
While its unique matière reminds us of the ingenuity of surface effects of Russian avant-garde artists, as Okada says of his work, “there is an idea that everything decays.” It can be said that there is a spirit that is similar to the tea ceremony and Japanese aesthetics, such as the "beauty of imperfection" that Tenshin Okakura pointed out in tea ceremony culture.
