今回の企画展「Saturday Night Once More」は、WALL_alternativeとして初となるMarco Galleryとのコラボレーション企画です。大阪に拠点を構えるMarco galleryは、昨年運営3年目にしてFrieze Seoulに初出展・日本のギャラリーとして唯一Frieze Seoul Stand Prizes に選出された注目を集める気鋭ギャラリーです。
Marco Galleryのディレクターである菰田寿允が掲げる「クロスオーバー」というコンセプトとそのディレクション力に強く共感し今回のコラボレーションが実現しました。
展覧会は、約 70 年ほど前に深沢七郎によって書かれた楢山節考（ならやまぶしこう）という物語に登場する「姥捨山」から着想を得ています。子供が生まれて人口が増えるたび、生活資源が限られているために人口調整を行わなければならないという村の掟に従って、70 歳に達した老人たちが山に捨てられるというディストピア的な世界がそこでは描かれています。本展では、70年前に描かれたこの姥捨山と現代社会との共通点を、ユートピア的な目線でポジティブに捉え直し、未来へ向けて理想的な社会をみんなで考えるということを試みます。
“Saturday Night Once More” is WALL_alternative’s first collaboration with Marco Gallery. Marco
Gallery, based in Osaka, is an up-and-coming gallery that has been attracting much attention from art
lovers. Last year, in its third year of operation, Marco Gallery participated in the art fair Frieze Seoul
for the first time and was the only Japanese gallery selected for the Frieze Seoul Stand Prizes.
This collaboration was made possible by the strong sympathy for the “crossover” concept and
direction of Marco Gallery’s director, Hisamasa Komoda.
The exhibition is inspired by “Ubasuteyama” in the novel “Narayama Bushi Ko(The Ballad of
Narayama)” written by Shichiro Fukasawa about 70 years ago. The story depicts a dystopian world in
which elderly people who have reached the age of 70 have to be abandoned in the mountain according
to a village code that requires population adjustment whenever the population increases due to the
birth of a child, because of limited living resources. This exhibition attempts to rethink the similarities
between the Ubasuteyama depicted 70 years ago and contemporary society from a positive, utopian
perspective, and to think together about the ideal society for the future.

本展では、姥捨山を再解釈した『サタデーナイトワンスモア（土曜の夜をもう一度）』という、満月の夜の孤島でウバステされたジーさんバーさんたちが開催しているヤバいパーティーに忍びこんだ若者たちと老人たちの物語を通じて、この展覧会に関わる全員（WALL＿alternative、Marco Gallery、作家、そして、鑑賞者）で対話し、私たちの未来へ向けて何かが生まれる予感を感じることができれば幸いに思います。

In this exhibition, through our original story “Saturday Night Once More” -the reinterpretation of
“Ubasuteyama,” about youngesters who sneak into a bad party held by abandoned old farts and hags
in an isolated island in a full moon night- , I hope that everyone involved in this exhibition (WALL_,
alternative, Marco Gallery, the artist, and the audience) will engage in discussion with each other and
feel a sense of something being born for our future.

・ The Exhibition is reinterpretation of “Ubasuteyama” depicted in Shichiro Fukasawa’s novel

【Marco Galleryについて】
コマーシャルギャラリーとしてクロスオーバーというコンセプトの下、2020年に始まりました。各領域において一見すると関係のないように思えるものの中に点のように潜んでいる美的感覚を見つけ、展覧会を通じてそれらの点を結ぶことで線にして、そして、立体的なものにするための実験を行いながら、時空を越えて機能する場となることを目指しています。その中で私たちは、まるで生きている時代や社会に呼応するようにしてアーティストたちが表現するものが、文化や国、時間を超えて、どこかの誰かによって読み解かれ、アーティストが生み出した作品群がその誰かにとって、アーティストの生きた時代や社会を紐解くための知覚的な参考書となることを期待しています。ときにそれらは、人類の道標となり、足跡となり、そして、人間がより人間的であれるように世界を耕してくれるものであると確信しています。
その上で、アーティストが止めどなく継続的な表現活動をするための環境が必要であると考えており、その環境は、ギャラリスト、キュレーター、批評家、コレクターのみなさま、そして、未来のそういった存在になる人々など、このような関係者に代表される人々の化学反応があってこそ、醸成されると考えています。
Marco Gallery は、このような考えのもと、その醸成を促す存在の一つとしてこれから先の未来を見据えた活動を行なっています。
具体的には、上記のように文化や国や時間を超えた分野横断的なクロスオーバーしていくというコンセプトの下、弊ギャラリーでは、若手、中堅問わず、世界を舞台に見据えた作家たちとともに現在は、アート台北やアートフリーズなどのアーフェアへの参加を行いながら、国内においては、世代を超えてアートに対して感度の高い土壌を耕すべく心斎橋に場所を構えて展覧会を構築し、現場での鑑賞者との直接の対話を通じて作家の思想や現在の社会との関係性などを口伝しつつ、また、レジデンスとの関係構築も行いアーティストを派遣するなど、枠にとらわれることなく周辺領域が拡張される場となることを目的としています。
As a commercial gallery, it began in 2020 under the concept of “crossover”. Our goal is to become a
place that functions beyond time and space by finding aesthetic sensations that lie hidden like dots
among seemingly unrelated objects in each domain and experimenting through exhibitions to connect
these dots to form a line, and then to make it three-dimensional. In this context, we hope that what
the artists express, as if in response to the times and societies in which they live, will be read by
someone somewhere, beyond culture, country, and time, and that the works created by the artists
will serve as a perceptual reference for that someone to unravel the times and societies in which the
artists lived. I hope that the works of art created by the artists will be a perceptual reference for
someone to decipher the times and society in which the artists lived. I am convinced that they can
sometimes be a beacon, a footprint, and a cultivation of the world so that we can be more human.
We believe that an environment for artists to engage in continuous expressive activities is necessary,
and that such an environment can only be fostered through a chemical reaction among gallerists,
curators, critics, collectors, and those who will become such people in the future. Marco Gallery
believes that the environment is fostered by the chemistry of the people represented by these parties.
Marco Gallery is one of the agents of such a reaction, and is engaged in activities with an eye toward
the future.
Specifically, based on the concept of cross-disciplinary crossover across cultures, countries, and time,
the gallery is currently participating in art fairs such as Art Taipei and Art Frieze with young and mid-
career artists with an eye on the world stage, while in Japan, we have an exhibition space in
Shinsaibashi, Osaka in order to cultivate a soil with a high sensitivity to art that transcends generations,
and through direct dialogue with the audience, we dispatch our artists’ ideas and their relationship
with contemporary society. Also we dispatch our artists to the artist in residences in various countries
to expand peripheral areas.
