Born in Nagano, Japan in 1978, Shinnosuke Tojo graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Art, Department of Fine Arts, and completed a research course at the same university in 2005. His work involves materializing his own mental landscapes and unconsciously perceived virtual images by applying large and small scratches and rust to the surfaces of metal plates and industrial products.
“SHINaNOBOYa” is the name of his imaginary friend from childhood and the first sculpture he ever made from memory. The work was unearthed at his parents' house in 2018, and since then it has become one of his essential motifs, which also helped him to remove material restrictions. In recent years, he has also been showing works that reveal an introverted expression captured by two paintings reflected on a screen. His production style, which focuses on the theme of existence, is not limited to painting, but also includes sculpture and installation works.
