既存の価値観や社会的視線によって規定されてきた「美」と「醜」、また「女性性」と「男性性」の境界に内在する揺らぎや矛盾に着目し、その両義的なあり方を、植物や花、女性の姿を通して表現する。
表現媒体は絵画に留まらず、写真、映像、インスタレーションといった多様なメディアを横断し、単一の視点では捉えきれない現実の複雑さに応答し、その本質を浮かび上がらせる。近年の制作では、家族や友人といった身近な他者との関係性から立ち現れる問いを起点とし、個人の記憶や歴史に向き合い、沈黙の中に置き去りにされてきた言葉や感情に光を当てる作品を展開している。個人的な領域にとどまらず、社会に内在する構造的課題へと接続し、新たな対話の可能性をひらく試みでもある。
主な展覧会に、2026年「VOCA展2026」（上野の森美術館・VOCA賞受賞）、2025年「アーティストとひらく 戸田沙也加展―沈黙と花」（横浜美術館）、2024年「TOKAS Emerging 2024―消えゆくものたちの言葉なき声」（TOKAS本郷）など。
Focusing on the instabilities and contradictions inherent in the boundaries between “beauty” and “ugliness,” as well as “femininity” and “masculinity,” which have been shaped by existing value systems and social gazes, the artist expresses their ambivalent and dual nature through motifs
such as plants, flowers, and the female figure.
Extending beyond painting, the practice traverses diverse media such as photography, video, and installation, responding to the complexity of reality that cannot be captured from a single perspective, and carefully bringing its essence into view.
In recent works, the artist takes as a point of departure questions that emerge from relationships with close others, such as family and friends, engaging with personal memories and histories while shedding light on words and emotions that have been left behind in silence. These works do not remain confined to the personal realm, but seek to connect with structural issues embedded in society, opening up possibilities for new forms of dialogue.
Major exhibitions include VOCA 2026 (The Ueno Royal Museum, VOCA Prize), Opening Dialogues: Sayaka Toda — Blooms in Silence (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2025), and TOKAS Emerging 2024 — “Echoes of the Unspoken: The Silent Voices of the Vanishing” (TOKAS Hongo), among others.
