1995년 일본에서 태어난 화가 남미는 미국의 미술대학을 졸업한 후 미국과 일본을 중심으로 활동하고 있다. 언어학이나 컴퓨터 사이언스의 영역에서 이용되는 알고리즘(문제를 해결하거나 목표를 달성하거나 하기 위한 정해진 계산 방법이나 처리 방법)을 독학으로 습득한 남쪽은 독자적으로 개변한 알고리즘을 기반으로 작품을 구축해 나간다. 그는 "회화의 설계도"가 되는 알고리즘을 캔버스에 직접 기입한 다음 자신이 설계한 프로그램에 근거해 색이나 형태를 배치해 간다. 그 때, 사전에 결정한 수속에 기계적으로 따르는 것 뿐만 아니라, 즉흥적으로 다른 색이나 형태를 두는 것으로, 회화를 그리는 남이 알고리즘을 작성한 과거의 자신을 초월해 간다고 작가는 말한다. 이와 같이 완성되는 남쪽의 작품은, 모두 추상화라는 공통점은 있지만, 그 외형에서 매우 다방면에 걸친다. 그러나 작가 자신에게 말하면 그 예술 실천의 목표는 단 하나이며, 그것은 '예술의 핵', 즉 예술을 예술이라 하고 있는 본질을 탐구하고 끌어내는 것이다. 남쪽은 '예술의 핵'에 이르는 자신의 독창적인 제작상의 방법론을 '미니멀리즘'이라고 부른다.
