"START Box" is a project run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo, a public interest incorporated foundation under the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, that provides young artists who find it difficult to secure a studio or other space with a creative space and supports their ongoing activities. It utilizes vacant storefronts in public housing and other locations, and rents them out at affordable rates. It also provides a venue for interaction between local communities and artists, and a place to exhibit their work.
This exhibition takes as its starting point the theme of MEET YOUR ART FESTIVAL 2025, "Rediscovery," and features four artists: Junko Awatani, Ogata Ryo, Kanamaru Tomoki, and Nonoyama Yuki, who have been active with START Box, which supports the creation and dissemination of young artists and the launch of their careers.
Coming from diverse backgrounds and working beyond the boundaries of expression, they re-examine the aesthetic sense, physicality, and local memories inherent in culture from their own perspectives, creating works that reinterpret them in a contemporary context.
This exhibition will present, through the perspectives of the next generation of artists, expressions that are budding while rooted in the "soil" of inherited culture.
EXHIBITION ARTISTS: Junko Awatani, Ryo Ogata, Tomoki Kanamaru, Yuki Nonoyama
