What is a Sekimori Stone?
These stones, said to have been devised by the tea master Sen no Rikyu, are placed at crossroads, such as stepping stones, in tea gardens. They are believed to have been called "gatekeeper stones" (stones that guard checkpoints) because they meant "please refrain from going any further" to guests. As they indicate a no-entry zone, they are now also used as barriers or amulets to prevent the intrusion of evil spirits.
