As an artist, filmmaker and curator, he fuses film and contemporary art to unravel the complex mechanisms behind filmmaking, weaving through his practice connections between people, materials and places that are often overlooked or omitted in conventional historical constructions.

He has held solo exhibitions such as "A Performance in the Church" at Liang Gallery (2021, Taipei, Taiwan), Tung Chung Art Award: "Giant Panda, Deer, Malayan Tapir and East India Company" (NTUE Museum, 2019, Taiwan), "Black and White - Malayan Tapir" (ISCP, 2018, New York, USA), and "MAM Screen 009: Hsu Chia-Wei" (Mori Art Museum, 2018, Tokyo). He has also exhibited at the Taiwan Governor's Office Industrial Research Institute at Liang Gallery (2017, Taipei, Taiwan), Huai Mo Village at the Red Fang Museum, which was recognized as the annual grand prize winner of the 15th Taishin Art Awards (2016, Taipei, Taiwan), and Position 2 at Van Abbemuseum (2015, Eindhoven, Netherlands). In 2013, he was the recipient of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART He was a finalist in the 2019 Taiwan Art Award, won the Grand Prize at the 15th Taishin Art Awards in 2017, and will receive the 10th Eye Art & Film Prize this year in 2024.

 

Graduated from Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains, France, Chia-Wei Hsu's work as an artist, filmmaker, and curator merges the language of film and contemporary art and unearths the complex mechanisms behind the production of images. Through his artistic practice, Hsu weaves connections between humans, materials, and places that have been overlooked or omitted in conventional historical narratives.
