Born in Tokyo in 1973. Using industrial sewing machines, he has published numerous works that expand the boundaries of embroidery as a medium while questioning the ever-changing nature of humanity and the value of labor since modernization. He graduated from the Department of Textiles at Goldsmiths College, London in 1998, and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001.
Recent major solo exhibitions include "Embroidery Boy Forever in Kyoto" (Museum "Eki" KYOTO, Kyoto, 2026), "Sekai no Kotowari—Art of Our Times" (The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, 2025-26), "30th Anniversary Exhibition: Choreo of Everyday Life" (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 2025), "Unfolding: Fabric of Our Life" (Center for Heritage Arts & Textile, Hong Kong, 2019).

Lives and works in Tokyo. Employing industrial-use sewing machines, Aoyama presents numerous works which expand the frame of the embroidery medium, by questioning the values inherent in humanity and labour with in the continuing changes effected by modernization.
