Toshiko Okanoue (born 1928) encountered collage through torn paper art at the painting class of Bunka Gakuin (Tokyo), Japan's first specialized art school. For over seven years from the 1950s, she created collages using pages from old magazines such as Vogue and Life left behind by the American occupation forces. With the support of the renowned art critic Shuzo Takiguchi, she held a solo exhibition at Takemiya Gallery and participated in the group exhibition "Abstraction and Fantasy" at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. In the late 1950s, she distanced herself from art after getting married. Since being introduced by photography critic Ryuichi Kaneko, she has held exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art in 2018 and at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in 2019.
This time, the exhibition will feature silkscreen prints based on collages.
