Shinnosuke Tojo

Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1978. Graduated from the Department of Comparative Sculpture, Faculty of Art and Design, Tokyo Zokei University in 2004, and completed postgraduate studies at the same university in 2005. Exhibited at MYAF 2023-2025 / 2023 "I bought a refrigerator." parcel / 2022 GUCCI solo exhibition and Setouchi Triennale. Received the Grand Prix at "SICF18" and "VOCA Exhibition 2019". Also participates in international art fairs, museums, and university residencies.
Perhaps influenced by some traumatic experience in his childhood, he creates art as if to confirm his own existence. His series expresses primal landscapes, inner landscapes, and unconsciously perceived illusions in metal, and in recent years, he has presented a series in which he reflects images onto the canvas, allowing reality and memory (reflection) to coexist. The doll (SHINaNOBOYa) that occasionally appears as a motif is an imaginary friend from his childhood, the first sculptural object he ever created in his memory, which was unearthed at his family home in 2018. Since then, it has been in a counterpart relationship with Tojo, and he is searching for the meaning of its existence. He maintains stability by giving form to self-harm and concealment, as if questioning whether he has the right to exist. His works are diverse, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and installations, regardless of the series.
