Ryota Watanabe is based in Tokyo and will be presenting his works after graduating from the Master's program at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2023. Watanabe creates his works by combining the act of painting with a brush and the destructive act of applying paint and scraping it off with tools such as a cutter knife that he created himself, leaving traces of these acts on the screen. Watanabe pursues the origins of what makes a painting a painting, while at the same time painting portraits and landscapes as a mirror of the era. Watanabe's painting technique follows the existentialism of Lucian Freud, who exudes vividness and richness in his brushstrokes, and Alberto Giacometti, who stripped away elements to get to the essence, and has switched to a modern approach, challenging the renewal of painting history that leads to Cubism.
