EXPO’70 OSAKA みどり館アーカイヴ

  • ART EXHIBITION
This pavilion was exhibited at the 1970 Osaka Expo by a corporate group led by the former Sanwa Bank (now the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ).
Inside the colorful polyhedral building, a huge dome screen 30 meters in diameter was set up, on which the panoramic all-sky film "Astrorama" was screened. Astrorama is a portmanteau of astro (heavenly body) and drama (drama). The full-view images produced by five cameras and the technology of ultra-three-dimensional sound created a "participatory film" experience that was different from the "film you watch" that had existed until then. Two films were screened, "Birth" and "Advancement." The former, with music by Mayuzumi Toshiro and a script by Tanikawa Shuntaro, featured the founder of Butoh, Hijikata Tatsumi. In addition, an exhibition of the Gutai Art Association, supervised by Yoshihara Jiro, was held in the entrance hall of the building.
The Midorikan Pavilion, which combined cutting-edge technology with avant-garde artistic expression, attracted a great deal of acclaim, with nearly six million visitors during the event.
