One who walks with the soilClay has been a companion for more than half of life. While being the greatest communicator, he is also someone who sometimes clashes and also reconciles. That unpredictable change overlaps with my own life. Works born with clay change shape in response to life's changes, and sometimes it is the clay itself that takes the lead.
He was born on Baengnyeongdo, the northernmost point of South Korea, and eventually arrived in Kyoto after traveling through various places. The process of continuously adapting to different environments resembles the appearance of ceramics that appear in the kiln beyond the maker's intention. Throughout his work, he consistently explored the essence of humanity and life itself.
The act of scraping away the burning emotions inside and transferring them into clay was both a creation and an act of self-acceptance. Rather than denying worldly desires, embrace them as part of your life. Through the process, I learned that denial and affirmation coexist.
In recent years, bird shapes have begun to appear in his works. The experience of loneliness and isolation in a foreign country became an opportunity to delve deeply into her inner world. Birds symbolize the will to cross boundaries.
As Hermann Hesse's 'Demian' says, 'The bird breaks its eggs and takes flight,' the journey beyond the protected world toward new truths continues. Even if there is a risk of crashing, I want to continue watching people and life together with clay.

One Who Walks with ClayClay has been my closest companion for more than half of my life. It is at once my greatest understanding partner and a presence with which I sometimes clash, only to reconcile again. Its unpredictability mirrors my own existence. The works born with clay shift alongside the changes of life, and at times it is not I but the clay that takes the lead.
Born on Baengnyeong Island, the northernmost edge of Korea, I passed through several cities before arriving in Kyoto. Adapting to unfamiliar environments resembles the moment when a form emerges from the kiln beyond the maker’s intention. Through making, I have continuously pursued the essence of humanity and of life itself.
Transferring burning emotions into clay is both creation and acceptance. Rather than escaping desire and conflict, I have learned to embrace them as part of life. Negation and affirmation coexist with in a single day.
In recent years, birds have begun to appear in my work. Experiences of isolation in a foreign land led me inward. The bird has become a symbol of crossing boundaries.
As in Hermann Hesse’s Demian, the bird must break the egg to be born. Even if the risk of falling remains, I continue this journey with clay, seeking truth and the possibility of loving humanity.
