Born December 10, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. Brother of author Pete Hamill.
For over 50 years, starting in the 1970s, he was active in major fields of American popular culture, including boxing, rock and roll, and entertainment. He was particularly known for his long tenure as the exclusive still photographer for Woody Allen's films, including "Ernie Hall" and "Manhattan." He also worked on Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull," starring Robert De Niro, and has photographed over 75 films in total. He is famous for his portraits of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Muhammad Ali, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and others.
His photo exhibitions have been held throughout the United States, Canada, London, Italy, and other locations, and his photographs have been featured in major American magazines such as Life, Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Saturday Evening News. In 2020, he published "DREAM LOVERS: JOHN AND YOKO IN NYC," a photobook of John and Yoko, with the British publisher ACC ART BOOKS.
